Comparison of Commercially available denture teeth with available natural teeth dimensions among genders

Background: Selecting the artificial teeth is an art, every prosthodontist should learn the art to fulfill the esthetic and functional requirement of the patient. It gives a pleasing, expressive and confident life to the patient.

Aim: To compare the dimensions of natural maxillary and mandibular anterior and posterior teeth with the dimensions of three commercially available denture teeth such as Acryrock,Biorock and Ivoclar Vivadent along with gender consideration.

Materials and Methods: The length and width of the natural anterior and posterior teeth from dentate casts of 23 males and 77 females were examined by a single examiner using a digital vernier caliper on a straight line and using a flexible ruler . These dimensions were also measured in three denture teeth mold charts: Acryrock, Biorock, Ivoclar vivadent. The dimensions thus obtained are compared between the three systems of artificial teeth and natural teeth for selecting the best system of artificial teeth for complete denture prosthesis.

Results: This present study concludes that the width of available natural maxillary anterior teeth matches with the dimensions of all the three commercially available denture teeth such as Ivoclar Vivadent, Acryrock, Biorock. But the mandibular anterior and posterior teeth of maxillary and mandibular dentate cast dimensions were matching only with the Ivoclar vivadent teeth set irrespective of the genders.

Conclusion: From this study, the determination of the size of anterior and posterior artificial teeth using the natural teeth dimensions for fabrication of complete denture prosthesis was proved statistically and mathematically.

Clinical evaluation of three different anterior reference points on protrusive condylar guidance angle using a semi adjustable articulator and lateral cephalogram

Background: Studies had shown that different anterior reference points can mount the maxillary cast in variable position in the articulator which may affect the protrusive condylar guidance angle on setting the semi adjustable articulator. So there is a need for search of reliable anterior reference point in orienting the maxillary cast on the articulation for accurate prosthesis fabrication.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 3 different anterior reference points Orbitale, Orbitale minus 7mm, 36mm from the incisal edge of maxillary central or lateral incisor on the protrusive condylar guidance values registered on Hanau wide vue articulator and compare it to the protrusive condylar guidance angle obtained from lateral Cephalometric tracings.

Materials and methods: A total of 30 healthy human subjects were randomly selected for this study from volunteer dental students. Orbitale, Orbitale minus 7mm, 36mm from the maxillary incisal edge of the subjects were the three anterior reference points used for facebow transfer using Hanau springbow. With the help of protrusive records, articulation was done in Hanau wide vue articulator using this record and condylar inclination values were noted on right side and left side.Three sets of lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken in maximum intercuspation and protrusive position, traced manually and values tabulated for all 30 subjects.

Results: Mean value of orbitale is highest and mean value of 36mm from the maxillary incisal edge is lowest.

Conclusion: Orbitale can be used as a reliable anterior reference point in facebow transfer using hanau wide vue articulator.

Neuromuscular Disorders And Prosthodontic Strategies In Complete Denture Patients

Neuromuscular disorders leads to loss of muscle function because they affect the musculature and/or the nervous system. Etiology could be due to autoimmune disorders, genetic/hereditary disorders. The process of mastication is controlled and coordinated by a well-defined neurological system which primarily consists of skeletal muscles, motor and sensory nerve fibers. This neuromuscular control involves in every phase of complete denture prosthesis construction.

Skeletal muscles directly play a vital role in complete denture prosthesis function. A good muscular control and coordination is necessary for denture stability by means of active and passive muscle fixation. Muscles of mastication and muscles of facial expression are widely involved in denture stability. Hence neuromuscular control plays a vital role in denture construction as well as function.

Reconstructing Smiles: Maxillofacial Prosthesis

Maxillofacial prosthesis are required for the reconstruction of head and neck deformities in patients with congenital anomalies or defects which are acquired like trauma, surgery, infection, burns, or cancer . These defects might need both extra oral and intraoral prosthetic rehabilitation. Re-evaluating the materials used in the field of maxillofacial prosthesis is beneficial because facial rehabilitation is necessary for the person to live a comfortable life. In addition to addressing the functional and aesthetic impairment, the prosthodontic therapy of these patients should focus on ensuring psychological wellbeing. From wax, metal, leather, rubber, etc., to the most recent biomedical material, like polymers, the materials have come a long way. While the new materials have shown some fantastic qualities, they have certain disadvantages. We are still looking for a material that possesses all the necessary qualities to rehabilitate maxillofacial deformities in the best way possible.

Magnetic Sectional Denture for Microstomia Patient with Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A Case Report

This article presents a case report of a patient with oral sub mucous fibrosis and subsequent microstomia , that resulted in restricted mouth opening. A magnetic sectional denture was planned for the maxillary arch to overcome the problem and a conventional denture was planned for the mandibular arch. Primary impressions were made, followed by sectional maxillary special trays for border molding. The record bases for the maxillary arch was fabricated in heat cure by incorporating magnets of 3mm diameter on the anterior alveolar ridge and middle part of mid palatal raphe region, and 5 mm magnet towards the posterior most part of mid palatal raphe region. The jaw relation was carried out, followed by teeth setting and wax try in. Finally the maxillary denture was processed in two sections and denture insertion was done. Satisfactory retention was achieved and phonetics was restored.

Esthetic management of labial screw access channel with angulated screw channel abutment system – Case Report

This case report describes an alternative technique in the prosthetic management of angulated implant with angulated access channel abutment system with adequate esthetics. Virtual planning for implants in the maxillary anterior region using Cone Beam Computed Tomography of the patient revealed the placement of screw access on the labial surface. To prevent esthetic failure Angulated Screw Channel Abutment system was sought for. This system enables the correction of implant angulation up to 25 degrees with palatal screw access with good esthetics.

Multiple suction cup dentures-a rejuvenation of the centenarian – A Case report

The heart of prosthodontics, whether it is a Removable denture, Obturator or Maxillofacial prosthesis, the first goal is the Retention. The best mode of retention is always the remaining oral soft tissues, bone and teeth. But not always hard and soft tissues provide the desired retention. So in these types of cases the mode of retention is generally from implants, extraoral supports and pre prosthetic surgery which are quite invasive, complicated and expensive. This paper is all about a simple technique which aids in achieving retention in the removable complete denture patients with resorbed ridge, knife edge, and flabby ridge in an inexpensive, time saving noninvasive and least complicated way using a heat-cured multi-cup silicone liner. This technique solves many of the physiologic and psychologic problems associated with denture wearing with compromised retention
