Abstract

Modern literature in the Anthropocene uses innovative storytelling techniques and potent symbolism to address the pressing issues of climate change. In this chapter, we examine how the theme of fire has been utilized in contemporary literature to represent the destructive and transformative aspects of a warming planet. This study sheds insight into narratives that channel climate anxiety into a balance of despair and hope by analyzing works by Kim Stanley Robinson, Margaret Atwood, and Amitav Ghosh. As a metaphor for both destruction and rebirth, fire embodies the complex interplay between humans and their natural surroundings. This critique is situated within eco-critical discourse and draws on the work of theorists like Timothy Morton and Rob Nixon, who highlight the ethical and representational issues posed by climate change. Williams (2022) examines the relationship between climate narratives and social equity, advocating for more inclusive and justice-oriented storytelling. Pepper (2023) highlights how climate fiction employs new narrative tactics to address “slow violence” and intergenerational justice. In addition, the Cambridge Companion to Literature and the Anthropocene (2020) by Goodbody and Rigby emphasizes how modern literature addresses ecological trauma through experimental forms that challenge traditional notions of time and human-centered stories. Ultimately, modern climate fiction transcends environmental narratives to become a vital platform for exploring the cultural, social, and political dimensions of the climate crisis. With its focus on hypothetical futures and creative resilience, fiction becomes an essential medium for imagining how we may survive and live together ethically during this period of ecological crisis
