Abstract

This paper explores how environmental factors—both physical and socio-political—profoundly influence action-reaction patterns, dialogue, identity formation, memory creation, and psychological health in Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns. Focusing primarily on Mariam and Laila, and extending to other female characters, this study reveals how the war-ravaged Afghan environment, cultural repression, and domestic violence shape each character’s trajectory. The analysis engages with psychological and sociolinguistic theories to explore how environmental pressures forge resilient identities, compel silence or outbursts, and shape long-term memory and trauma. The role of gendered space, war, patriarchy, and religious dogma as conditioning environments is central to this paper, and it ultimately argues that the environment is not merely a backdrop but an active agent in the development of characters. Through this lens, Hosseini’s novel offers a rich psychological and sociocultural commentary on Afghan womanhood.
